A special part of counterfeiting is counterfeited medicines. Counterfeit medicines include less or none of the stated active ingredients, with added, sometimes hazardous, adulterants, substituted ingredients and are often sold with a false brand name. Q-scope digital microscopes have proven to be helpful in combating the counterfeit drug problem. The drugs their selves can be tested chemically or using Raman spectroscopy but the first step can be done with the Q-scope. Boxes and blisters of the counterfeit medicine are designed to be identical but specialist use the Q-scope for finding and documenting the differences between fake and real which often are only known by the manufacturers and trained expert
